Hubble Art

New Hubble Space Telescope pictures were released today, in honor of the 17th anniversary of deployment of the orbiting observatory by the space shuttle Discovery. Absolutely astounding, as always.

Especially when he condones, slavery and murder of the innocent: Exodus 21. Show some character, and instead of just deleting my post, read Exodus, chapter 21.

    Joe:

Thanks for your comment and I actually understand your concerns, but I think they are not good reasons for rejecting Christianity. Let me address them briefly.

    Regarding slavery:
–The “slavery” that was addressed in the Old Testament was almost never like the chattel slavery of the American South. It was not based on race, it was usually not for life (unless the “slave” elected to stay with the family after his time was up, as in Exodus 21), and only his time belonged to his master, not his entire being. Slaves lived pretty much like free laborers, and in some ways had more security.
–Slavery in the Greco-Roman world of the New Testament was often the same, but could sometime be extremely cruel. You cannot blame Christians for that. The New Testament harshly condemns slave traders.
–In the New Testament, slaves were given equal status before Christ and in the church. There were no cries to outlaw slavery, but the foundations were laid that would eventually make slavery’s foundations crumble. As Paul writes in Colossians: “Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all.”
–The abolition of the slave trade and slavery in Europe and the Americas was spearheaded by Christians.

In regards to “murder of the innocent,” I am not sure what you are referring to in Exodus 21. There are punishments for the guilty listed, but no random killings of the innocent.

I am sorry that you reject Christ, but the reasons you have given are quite inadequate.

    With Respect,
