Unemployment isn’t easy, but as a Christian I have to trust that God is my provider. I have work to do to find a job, but even then it is God who is in ultimate control. I have been comforted and encouraged lately by the song “The Lord Will Provide” by Matthew Smith, which is on his “All I Owe” CD.
Though troubles assail and dangers affright,
Though friends should all fail and foes all unite;
Yet one thing secures us, whatever betide,
The scripture assures us, the Lord will provideThe birds without barn or storehouse are fed,
From them let us learn to trust for our bread:
His saints, what is fitting, shall ne’er be denied,
So long as it’s written, the Lord will provideWe may, like the ships, by tempest be tossed
On perilous deeps, but cannot be lost.
Though Satan enrages the wind and the tide,
The promise engages, the Lord will provide.His call we obey, like Abram of old,
Not knowing our way, but faith makes us bold;
For though we are strangers we have a good Guide,
And trust in all dangers, the Lord will provideWhen Satan appears to stop up our path,

I’ve been looking for work for a year, but there is food on the table and the bills are all paid for now.

What if the Lord doesn’t provide? Have you considered that possibility? He doesn’t always give us what we want. Sometimes we get what we need. Maybe we need some poverty in this country because we’ve strayed so far from the Way.

I’m no health-and-wealth person; I consider that to be a distortion of Christianity. And I agree that hard times can point people back to God, but it isn’t a given. In the Old Testament prophets, the people of Israel stubbornly resisted God (while giving him lip service) in the face of adversity, but didn’t really turn back to him.
My perspective is that of 2 Cor 1:8-9:
For we do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. (ESV)
Some people say that God will never give you something you cannot handle. That is not true. He often brings people to a point where they are beyond what they think they can handle so that they will cling to God and God alone.
